When journalists are silenced, society suffers. But as of December 2017, a record 262 journalists were in jail for their work around the world. Prison can be incredibly isolating - over the years CPJ has reported on incidents of torture and abuse, of journalists being denied access to their lawyers and families, and of the sheer lengths that authorities will take to stop a story. But you can help keep their stories, and their spirits alive.

Send a message of support to an imprisoned journalist - raise your voice, and help CPJ to #FreethePress!

Free the Press is the Committee to Protect Journalists campaign to bring awareness, build support, and inspire action on behalf of journalists imprisoned for their work.

Leading up to World Press Freedom Day, on May 3rd, CPJ will highlight this brave group of journalists. Learn their stories, use our digital postcards to send messages of hope, and join the #FreeThePress campaign to stand in solidarity and advocate for their immediate release.

You can also participate in the #freethepress conversation on Facebook and Twitter and sign up for our newsletter to get the latest updates and news.

How to host a CPJ postcard event

There has never been a more dangerous time to be a journalist. Help us spread the message, and support imprisoned journalists worldwide by hosting your very own CPJ postcard event.

Whether you are gathering a group of friends, or speaking to a classroom of students, CPJ can provide you with all the materials you need to host a #FreeThePress postcard writing session. Learn about the work that CPJ does, about the stories of these brave journalists, and then send digital postcards to the journalists, using their campaign pages, linked below. Share photos of your event, or highlight your support on social media using the hashtag #FreeThePress

You will find links to a video about CPJ, and downloadable biographies for this year's spotlight cases. If you are interested in obtaining physical postcards, or in the possibility of inviting a CPJ speaker to facilitate your session, in person, or remotely, please reach out to: [email protected]
