This month, CPJ's #FreeThePress campaign focuses on Jones Abiri, publisher of the Nigerian tabloid newspaper, the Weekly Source, who was arrested in July 2016. According to his family, Nigeria’s State Security Services (SSS) has yet to charge Abiri. They believe Abiri’s arrest is connected to a report the Weekly Source republished that stated the military was considering a coup against President Mohammadu Buhari. CPJ and Abiri’s colleagues are unable to confirm where he is being held, and his lawyer and family have not been able to see or speak with him. Learn more about Abiri’s case and join CPJ in calling for his immediate release.
